Daily Q: What Was (Or Is) Your Go-To After-School Snack?
For me, it was all about the ants on a log – celery stalks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins. Whoever first came up with this idea should have a Nobel Prize category created in his honor.
So simple, so flavorful and such a brilliantly underhanded way to get kids raised on white bread and processed cheese to actually eat something healthy. I still make it every now and then, sometimes substituting cranberries.
What was your after-school snack of choice? Do you still indulge?

my sister and i used to melt cheese on doritos - our version of nachos
apples with peanut butter.
when i was in high school though it was always like half a bag of cookies or a bag of popcorn. no wonder i was fat.
@deprivation_now@xanga - Lol...that's almost as unhealthy as you can get. and now you have a dieting blog..
@InTheThin@xanga - thanks... i was in high school and had a superfast metabolism, i was always underweight.. so i guess it didn't matter. thanks anyway
Totino's Pizza Rolls. I have to admit, I still love these things though I don't let myself eat these much anymore.
My mom used to make pimento cheese sammich triangles and divide them up among me and my brothers.
@chow - heck yes, Pizza Rolls! I used to love those and eat them straight out of the oven (and then get owned because the filling is way too hot)
memories =)
@SomethingAboutKaren@xanga - Hahaha, a common experience :) There's nothing like the sensation of biting into a yummy Pizza Roll and having 350 degree Pepperoni and Cheese squirt into your mouth.
OUCH.
I forget -every- time.
I actually deep-fry mine. =O
I know. SO unhealthy, but I figure this -- if I'm going to only eat these once every few months, it's okay. I can splurge once in a while. Back in the day when I totally let myself go though, I'd go to Costco and get the 200 pack and eat them by huge deep-fried batches, along with Tater Tots sometimes.
When you deep-fry them, they come out SUPER crispy, And sometimes the filling oozes out and it gets slightly burnt and crispy too (that well-done pizza thing). So good. But so bad. :)
I always had cookies.
That explains why I was a fatty.
Now I just eat lunch when I come home... -__o
@deprivation_now@xanga - Oh my goodness! me and my siblings use to do that too XD they're way better than plain old nachos because it has more flavor than plain old nachos.
Those ants on a log look good! Well I would just eat anything there was since most of the time there wasn't much snacks and I skipped lunch.
I really want to try ants on a log. There was another post on here about goldfish surrounded by a blue cream cheese lake or something. I WANT THAT.
We werent allowed after school snacks :(.
However once a week, after church classes, we had a chance to get stuff from the ice cream truck :D
It depends what time I get home, and also depends on what kind of snack I can find.
i didnt snack much but sometimes i would ahve curried manto sauce+cream cheese with crackers, or just crackers and cheese! :) i usually came home late and just ate dinner when i got there...
When I was a kid, we used to have something like a couple animal cookies. My mom would actually leave portioned out snacks for us kids and locked the pantry so we couldn't get anything else.
Now that I have my own pantry, my daily snack changes from day to day. I usually go for some of the leftovers from dinner (after school for me is about 2200), or chips and salsa.
Apples and peanut butter or some sun chips.
I try not to eat after school now and just wait for dinner. It's hard.
chips
Oooh Apples& Peanut Butter, and Chips&Salsa.
Sometimes if I'm really hungry I make myself a bean burrito.
Ants on logs.. WTF!! never heard of them and it sounds friggen WEIRD.
i don't eat when i come home... casue i finish at 2pm and i usually have a sandwhich at school...
but when i was little my mom used to make me carrot sticks and celery with cream cheese
elementary school: string cheese
middle/high school: protein shake, then a nap.
whatever's lying around
1 bag of microwave popcorn, every day after school. Probably my favorite part of the day, and I got pretty upset if someone disturbed my ritual by for example eating some of it.
As a kid my fave afternoon snack was easy mac. I had it so much back then that by the time I got to college it made me sick! Now, I prefer just a fruit or a yogurt.
