Today, I made monkey bread after work. If you've ever been to McDonald's, they have this thing called Cinnamon Melts, which is pretty much the same thing as monkey bread. Anyway, it's horribly delicious and deceptively easy.
First, biscuits.
You start out with buttermilk biscuits (the small kind). I always jump and scream so much when opening these stupid biscuit cans! Ugh. I hate them.

There's an opened can. Notice all the wrapper is gone. That's because it said to peel in the direction of the arrow, so I did, but it was a dud. Now, that whole time I'm super freaked out it's going to pop at any second. So I'm half disappointed, half relieved that it doesn't. But then I have to push at the seam and then twist it until it pops and I nearly scream my head off. I did jump and yelp a little, though.
Then, I separated the biscuits.
And cut them into quarters.
Next, sugar and cinnamon together.
Then, all shaken up.
Beautiful.
Then, the biscuit pieces go into that fabulous mixture.
Shake shake shake it all up.
Ahhh. Wonderfully coated biscuit pieces. I heard a foreign woman call it "bis-kwit" once. It was very cute, not to mention linguistically thoughtful, and that's how it's spelled, so why not?
Okay, so these little biskwit pieces have to stick together somehow because now they're all coated in cinnamony sugar and no longer annoyingly sticky. This is where melted butter comes into play.
Add a little brown sugar.
And pour over the biscuit pieces.
Pop it in the oven, and....
Tada! Monkey bread. Doesn't it look delicious? My little brother said it looked like brains (which I guess it kind of does), but it sure doesn't taste like it.
Have you ever had or made monkey bread before? What do you add to your recipe?

oh that looks awesome!! i shall head to mcd's. i have no time to bake =/
They look better before they're cooked. Is it the butter that does that?
That actually looks quite appetizing to me... lol. Might try this :)
hungryyy!!!
How do YOU know it doesn't taste like brains? lol
My mom used to make this for us when we were little. Ohmygosh it was so good! I was thinking about trying my hand at it the other day - my boyfriend had never heard of it, much less had it. It's easy, delicious, and kids (and adults) love it!
It looked delicious until it got to the butter part o_O. I was all ready to go out and buy some biscuits too =D.
I've tried it before. It was good. :D But... that's a lot of butter. o_o
How many cans of biskwits, er biscuits did you use? How large of a pan do you use? And what is the oven temperature, and how long do you bake it?
ooooo!!! i like, but that too much butter for me!
have fun with that heart attack.
Looks different... might try it one day.
Wow, that looks so good! I've never tried it before, but I think I want to make it now!
Oh, yummy.
My grandma makes Monkey Munch, which is Chex cereal, cocoa powder, powdered sugar and something else that I am forgetting about.
Monkey bread is sooo amazing! My aunt makes it for Christmas.

I love making a variation of this--Gorilla Bread. And if it's a gorilla, it's gotta be even tastier, right? The recipe is almost the same except you put cream cheese inside the biscuits (one 8oz block of cream cheese can be cut into 20 squares, if you buy 2 rolls of 10ct biscuits) and you add chopped pecans in the mix! =)
It's super easy, inexpensive, and always a hit! I must have made this a billion times for dessert/breakfast/parties. =)
@SomethingAboutKaren@xanga - Can you post the recipe for this?
love monkey bread!!! we always made it at day camp =]
@chocolatescifi@xanga - I actually got the recipe from here:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/gorilla-bread-recipe/index.html
If you don't have a bundt pan, you can always make individual pieces of gorilla bread by just putting one cream cheese-filled biscuit in each holder of a cupcake pan. Just make sure to spray the pan down with nonstick spray first!
My variations on the gorilla bread recipe (to make it less unhealthy (haha!), easier, and a few cents cheaper):
-Instead of walnuts, I use pecans. For some reason, I always find that walnuts are more expensive than pecans.
-Substitute all/half of the butter for butter substitute/margarine
-Use 1/3 less fat or non-fat cream cheese
-One of the bonuses of making individual pieces of gorilla bread is that you end up using less of the brown sugar/butter mixture, cinnamon sugar, and nuts.
MMMM MONKEY BREAD... WHY DO THEY CALL IT THAT?
monkey bread is sooo good. -drools- i wish i had some right now! :D
