A friend recently came back from Turkey. Before he left, I requested baklava and Mike requested Turkish Delight, because of
The Chronicles of Narnia. For those of you who don't know (SPOILER ALERT!), in the first book,
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, the evil witch convinces Edmund to betray his siblings by giving him some Turkish Delight.
I got to try the Turkish Delight first. MAN! That stuff is good! I don't usually like sweet stuff, but I totally went back for seconds. I wouldn't betray my family over it, but then, I think in the book the witch had enchanted the dessert. I don't remember exactly though. The baklava is also excellent and I am considering sneaking a second piece as I type, even though my teeth were hurting with how sweet it was. However, Erkan says that the fresh stuff in Turkey is much better. I totally want to go now!
Have you ever tried Turkish delight? What foreign treats are your favorite?

I have never had Turkish Delight.. But The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe was just recently on the Disney Channel. It did make me wonder about Turkish Delight..
My favorite foreign treat that comes to mind is straight from my relative's kitchen in Poland. There's nothing better than a Paczki fresh out the oven rolled in powdered sugar.. A paczki is pretty much a jelly-filled donut, but much fluffier and less sweet. I think it's tradition to eat them every year on Fat Tuesday.. But don't fall short and buy jelly donuts, find a traditional Polish bakery to buy authentic Paczki!
I've never even heard of it . . . But I've had chocolate from Venezuela. That stuff is sooo good! It tastes kind of like dark chocolate, but has a flavor that I can't describe. Just yummy.
Mm that looks good. I love foreign foods. There's this Vietnamese spicy beef jerky that makes me tear up, but it's sooo good.
Ive never had Turkish Delight but Id like to try it. I love Indian sweets. Besan Ladoo is my favorite!
Yes, I especially like the ones with nuts. I can only eat 1 or 2 pieces at a time, it's very sweet.
I'm big on foreign sweets.I love both turkish delight and baklava! Prefer baklava though! So crispy crunchy sweet with yummy nuts and light treacle filling.
You should also try some Indian gulab jamun..if you haven't already.
yes once but was not very keen on it.
looove it.
"Chiese" food.
@FireYourBoss@xanga - "I especially like the ones with nuts." I'm sorry, I just had to giggle.
it looks great, but can anyone tell me what it actually is? chronicles of narnia got to me too, lol. i always imagined it as a sandwich
@Mr_Jin@xanga - Haha, I should have wrote pistachios.
Yessss I love them! They're so dear though, but so good, haven't had them in a while.
I was always curious about Turkish delights, but never got around to trying em. As for foreign treats... Japanese Mochi. (Red bean, Green tea, sesame) or Chinese moon cakes. Delishhh.
I love Turkish delights. I like Turkish style coffee,
Speaking of Baklava, I should go get some tomorrow.
You can make your own Turkish delight. I think they're traditionally flavored with rosewater, and I'm not so big on floral flavors, it takes getting used to. I like using lemon/orange extracts instead though (guess that's not really the same though). Foreign treats that I like...mochi!
i tried and it had chocolate on it.. it felt like putting sugar in my mouth.
I LOVE Turkish Delight! It's actually pretty widely available in the US - you just have to go a gourmet or world market to get it. (A regular supermarket, unless it's a Whole Foods, probably won't have it.)
Mmm, Turkish Delight is good. I've only had the British version, but I really liked it. I'd like to go to Turkey and try the real thing though.
I'm a big fan of Jaffa Cakes and Picnic bars.
I think Turkish Delight is ok but I like baklava, so good
but haven't had it in a while
I think my favourite foreign treats are Japanese wagashi and Korean ddeok
I have a soft spot for anything soft, chewy and glutinous
Looks good.
In 4th grade (I think) we either read or watched the movie The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and we wondered about Turkish Delight. In particular, how it was used to basically start the whole downhill run for Edmund. We had someone make it so we could understand how it was so tempting. And boy did we understand! LOVE IT!
I've had the British version of it that is sold in the USA, and it was too sweet and bland for my taste.
Now if it was chocolate that the witch was offering....!
fresh baklava straight from the oven. yummmmm (rubs belly)
I'm from mexico, so my sweet tooth has to put in: pan dulce (like really big cookies and pastries made from cane sugar, but altogether delicious!!), flan (oh goodness I love flan, especially the kind my abuela makes), and churros. yumm.
and then from Japan there is this amazing ice cream but it's small and has this kind of wrapping around it that you eat?? I don't remember what it's called but it was absolutely delicious!!!
and eclairs :) haha
but just give me some chocolate, a cup of coffee, and a book and I'm set. :)
Never had it, looks good.
