  • A Very Vietnamese Dinner

I know a lot of people are disgusted by the "balut" or duck embryo, but I have no problem eating it. I guess it's just what you grow up with. The only thing I missed from this dinner was durian (sầu riêng)

Hột vịt lộn [duck embryo - garnish here with salt/pepper and rau răm, which is like a Vietnamese coriander-type leaf]

The yolk is my favorite part, aside from the juices I already sucked out. It's soft and juicy, unlike the white of the egg which resides at the very bottom. People generally don't eat that because it's very hard, dry and tasteless.

My sister's egg had a big head/beak and a tiny neck. The skeleton of the duck is partly formed, as you can see. Personally, this is my least favorite part, as you can taste the squishy bones/innards and it doesn't have much flavor.

Canh chua [sour soup - soup itself has basic ingredients like okra, tomatoes, catfish, and bac ha (which is taro stem); coupled with the soup is thin vermicelli noodles]

Cơm rượu [balls of rice wine] I made these myself! My mom said if you eat too many, you can actually get drunk, so I can only eat about 3 at a time. There's also an opaque liquid that settles at the bottom of the bowl; this is rice wine and you can drink it plain, but it's concentrated and very sweet like syrup, but you can taste the alcohol.

    Would you eat balut?
