A Very Vietnamese Dinner
I know a lot of people are disgusted by the "balut" or duck embryo, but I have no problem eating it. I guess it's just what you grow up with. The only thing I missed from this dinner was durian (sầu riêng)

Hột vịt lộn [duck embryo - garnish here with salt/pepper and rau răm, which is like a Vietnamese coriander-type leaf]

The yolk is my favorite part, aside from the juices I already sucked out. It's soft and juicy, unlike the white of the egg which resides at the very bottom. People generally don't eat that because it's very hard, dry and tasteless.

My sister's egg had a big head/beak and a tiny neck. The skeleton of the duck is partly formed, as you can see. Personally, this is my least favorite part, as you can taste the squishy bones/innards and it doesn't have much flavor.
Canh chua [sour soup - soup itself has basic ingredients like okra, tomatoes, catfish, and bac ha (which is taro stem); coupled with the soup is thin vermicelli noodles]

Cơm rượu [balls of rice wine] I made these myself! My mom said if you eat too many, you can actually get drunk, so I can only eat about 3 at a time. There's also an opaque liquid that settles at the bottom of the bowl; this is rice wine and you can drink it plain, but it's concentrated and very sweet like syrup, but you can taste the alcohol.
Would you eat balut?

I've still yet to try it. My chances might be good since my girlfriend is Vietnamese, but we'll wait and see if she eats balut. She does eat durian and I truly dislike durian.
Yep, this is pretty much what I ate last night.
My brother just looked over my shoulder the moment i clicked on this and saw the balot and said
"mm, that stuff is soo good"

seeing the baby duckie would make me sad
I would need some encouragement, but I guess I would try it.
hell no....
I used to be able to eat the baby duck, but now for some reason I can't anymore.. but yay <3 Vietnamese food nonetheless xD
Balut? No thanks, however, I do love sour soup! I like to add rice into the soup, rather than just drink it and just eat it like that. Mmmmm...
Haha. Just the other day, I went to a restaurant to get some pho ga and bubble tea! I was going to get some banh mi, but I was already too full.
Fuck no.
I have the same plate in picture #2 LOL. random.
I would have serious problems trying this out. Don't think I would ever do it.
I'd try it if I could find balut in a restaurant.
If I can find a resturant that serves it, I'll do it.
oh dear god no...
i dont think i can stand it :(
pho for me please ><
I still wouldn't eat it.
I'm chinese so I guess I wouldn't be disgusted... just wary...
I'd try it if somebody went through it with me step by step like you just did.
I wouldn't stuff it in my mouth if someone dared me too. I can imagine it being a kind of salty, savoury flavour.
I used to be able to eat hot vit lon but nowadays
I just don't. It disgusts me now but I like eating the yellow part =D
Yes, i'm part vietnamese. ;)
