  • The Pretzel

What happens when you mix flour with a little sugar, yeast, and some water, and then sprinkle salt all over it?

The wonder of the food world we call Pretzel.

There is an old tale of an Italian monk who made the 'pretiola' as a way to reward children for learning their prayers. It is said he folded the dough to look as arms crossing the chest. Some say it was actually the Germans, some say it was the French. Whoever had the ingenious idea to create it, we as good Americans, took it and thought we could make it better. And, for once, we were right! Pennsylvania is basically the pretzel capital of the world. With companies like Sturgis', Anderson Pretzel, and Snyder's, America has a large corner on the pretzel industry.

Pretzels are not only delicious, they are diverse: pretzel shape, rods, sticks, bites, hard, soft, yogurt covered, spicy, Cinnamon and sugared...

My favorite is the old fashioned soft pretzel (it's bigger than your face) covered in salt with a side of hot cheese. Yummm

    Hungry yet?

What is your favorite kind of pretzel?
