  • Weird Recipe of the Day: Jello Mixed Vegetable Pie

Vintage recipes are decidedly less health-conscious than those of today. Organic ingredients, no trans fat, whole grains: none of these current food trends were paid much attention in the 50's and 60's. But apparently, some recipes from decades past were also less attuned to one key factor: taste.

That's the only way I can explain the Pie Plate Salad, an unappetizing combination of...wait for it... lemon Jello and canned mixed vegetables.

    Ugh. Here's the recipe:

At first I thought this "pie" (I'm sorry, yummy pies everywhere) had a crust, making this sort of quiche. But no, it's simply a can of mixed vegetables--you know, the ones with cube-shaped carrots, corn, lima beans and peas--suspended in lemon gelatin. The white garnish you see in the ad? Tartar sauce.

Mmmm. This is like the Jello salad they would serve in hell. For whimsy's sake, several brave chefs on the Internet have actually cooked this ominous pie:

It doesn't look good, does it? No, it doesn't.

    Would you try this "pie"?
