Why I Am Currently A Vegetarian
Hi everyone. I've decided to become a vegetarian for the time that I am in Kansas. No meat and no dairy products. The meat we buy from Walmart and Ron's Supermarket goes bad within a few days of getting it. So after the last chicken that Muslimdaddy bought, we've decided not to eat meat or dairy products while we are here (until June 2010). Even one of Muslimdaddy's friends here can no longer drink the milk or make cereal because the milk is also bad within a few days. Muslimdaddy thinks the people who buy the meat here are mixing old meat with new meat or not cooking the meat all the way through, only cooking half of it or they are just buying bad meat to begin with. Here are a few examples of the meat we've bought at Walmart and Ron's Supermarket:
1. The meat we bought at Walmart (hamburger) had little pieces of bones in it.
2. The milk we bought from Walmart was bad within one week even though the packaging said it wouldn't go bad for three weeks.
3. Some chicken we bought made us sick because it was old.
4. Our sheep that we had killed for us the hala way (Islamic way by slitting its throat and saying "Bismillah Allahu Akbar" over it) didn't taste good either.
5. The milk we bought from Ron's Supermarket (Moo Brand) went bad in like three to four days of purchase.

I'm a vegetarian, and have been for the fifteen years of my life.
Props to you! Keep it up! :)
oh wow, that would make me turn into a vegetarian too.
Hamburger meat should never have bones in it. That's just gross....
Yuck. I think that's enough to make anyone a vegetarian (which I am, as well).
It sounds like they're not keeping the meats/milk in good condition, so it goes bad faster than it should. That would make me go Vegetarian, too. Especially knowing that the meat had bones in it.
i didn't know walmart sold food but i think anything from walmart makes you a bit apprehensive given their reputation.
and i'm also not a fan of grinding up a hundred cows' carcasses for some mcnuggets.
Along with all those things, vegetarian food is naturally healthier, less calorie-dense, and (obviously) cruelty-free. Go veggies!
That's kind of f'd up. That everything spoils so quickly there. I don't know if I'm just fortunate enough to live in an area where that isn't the case (also never buy any meat or produce from Wal-mart, that's just a bad idea).
I'll probably never be a vegetarian but I definitely go for the hormone-free chicken and lots of fish just to be on the healthier side of being an omnivore.
Well obviously Walmart isn't the best place to shop for groceries.
Hmm... going veg...while shopping at Walmart..
Anyone else see any backwardsness in this?!
Walmart is crap
Hi, I'm from Kansas too, and if you want some good suggestions for where to get your produce (and meat if you change your mind), I'd be happy to comment--
Walmart isn't going to be your best bet for groceries around here, as far as fresh stuff. Instead, shop at Dillon's. It's an offshoot of Kroger/King Soopers if you're familiar with them, and their meat is MUCH better. My husband and I shop there and find that the prices are very competitive with Walmart, but with higher quality. They have excellent produce and meat. If you're in northeast Kansas (Manhattan, Lawrence, KC areas), there is a wonderful place called Ray's Apple Market. Also fantastic (locally grown and organic as well) produce and meat. Dillon's milk will not spoil as fast as Walmart or Aldi's supermarkets.
So, if you really do want to stick with just veggies, go to Dillon's. If you want good meat, also go to Dillon's. Feel free to ask any questions, and happy cooking!
Wow! If food was that bad down here, I'd be going vegetarian myself. Luckily, I live in Texas and we cannot live without our meat!
I remember living in Kansas. The food there really was horrible. I agree with the poster that said Dillon's is your best bet. The Super Wal*Mart here used to have bad food, bad they are making huge improvements except for thier seafood. I am thinking the problem with your store lies in the managment moreso than it being a Wal*Mart.
That is so nasty, I have bought meat from Wal-mart that was already bad, and milk goes bad in my area within days. I never buy meat from Wal-mart and switched to soy milk for everyday use, and only use cow milk once in awhile, also a bit lactose intolerant so the soy helps.
ew! the milk went bad too? if i were you i'd become vegan, not vegetarian ;P
Hmm I don't remember ever having a problem with food when we lived in Kanses, but we lived in a town with more options than just Wal-Mart. What a bout fish?
http://www.theppk.com/nomicon.html This is a good cookbook if you want to go veg.
Just curious, what does "Bismillah Allahu Akbar" mean?
more healthier as vegetarian/vegan
Just don't buy your meat from Wal Mart! Don't buy meat anywhere that doesn't have a butcher. If the pre-cut meat is being shipping it's going to be terrible. It's impossible for places like Wal Mart to have good meat. Why would someone give up meat soley because 2 stores don't have good produce?? You didn't mention anything about ethics or health so I assume that is your only reason. You need to look around in your community and find an organic market or whole foods grocery. If your taste buds are picky about meat only buy free-range organic from a market they butcher the meat right there in the store. And what the heck has living in Kansas have anything to do with it? Wal Mart meat is nasty no matter how quickly it goes bad.
Oh and a heads up, mutten isn't your best bet. Why do you think you don't see that at your typical grocery store? Answer, because a mojority of people in the US find it nasty! Don't swear off local meat over a sheep. Saying a prayer over it isn't going to make it magically taste like something other than old sheep. Look into local organic farms in your area that sell meat by the quarter or even pre-cut smaller portions. Also give almond milk a try. It's in the chilled section with the rest of the milk. Soymilk is waaaaaaay too sweet and american manufactored soy isn't exactly healthy for you anyway. If you're worried about price of any of these things than just cut back on your intake. If you can give it up all together, cutting back to even out what you were paying before won't be an issue.
I'm vegetarian and I know these things! Come on, put some thought into it! You don't give up milk and meat because you think Wal Mart is gross and automatically call yourself a vegetarian by default. It's also a pretty fool proof way to annoy vegetarians btw.
EW! I don't blame you for wanting to avoid those items while you're there. Be safe!
Its really great. you feel 10 times better.
I'm a vegetarian and i think you should keep it up even if your not in kansas the meat you got looks really gross i hope more people turn veg from this thank you
I just started living the vegetarian lifestyle and absolutely love it I've had not had any problems adapting to this way of eating.. I'm doing it because I want to get healthier and stay that way. I do not miss eating meat at all. They're are so many choices that are so much healthier then eating meat. But, even when I did eat it, I would never buy it from Walmart. I wouldn't even look at Walmarts meat section. Or, their produce for that matter. Walmarts great, for some things, but never for meats. Find yourself a supermarket with a good meat section if you want to still eat it, which from your post sound to me like you probably will again. But, If I was you, id stay away from Walmarts meats.
The vegetarian or Vegan way of eating is in my opinion the healthiest way to eat, I know that now since ive educated myself about it. I do regret though, that I didnt know this years ago, but, better later then never. Maybe if you do a little research about the health benefits of eating veretarian, you might not go back to eating meat. Good luck to you.
