I love Chinese food. The non-authentic kind. The kind that comes out of paper containers that is delivered to your door. My issue? My husband is very allergic to MSG so if we want Chinese food, I have to make it myself.
I got
this book out of the library that has Chinese-restaurant-style recipes, unfortunately, it is out of print so I am going to have to test them out before returning the book to the library. The following recipe is inspired by the book's Beef with Broccoli recipe, but, as usual, I changed it up to make it my own. This made quite a lovely dinner and was very easy and did not require a lot of ingredients. This is a good beginner's recipe! It is fast and easy to make, I will definitely be making this one again.
Suzie's Beef with Broccoli
1 nice-size steak, enough for 2 people
4 tbsp tamari (if you have it) soy sauce
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp mirin
1 tsp black bean sauce
1 tsp sugar
1 bunch of broccoli, cleaned
1" piece of peeled and grated ginger
6 tbsp oil
salt and pepper
- Trim fat from meat and cut into thin strips across the grain, the meat should be around 3" long.
- Combine meat with wet ingredients and sugar. Let sit in the fridge for 10 minutes.
- Cut off the florets and trim into bite-sized pieces. Peel the stalk and slice on a bias to make thin diagonal slices.
- Heat pan and add 2 tbsp of oil. Add broccoli and season with salt, pepper and some of the ginger, like 1 tsp. Stir fry, moving constantly for 2 minutes. Remove from pan.
- Add remaining oil and add beef, sauce and ginger. Again, stir fry moving constantly for 2 minutes. If beef is not cooked at this point, cook a little longer. Return broccoli and mix well and reheat for 30 seconds. Serve on rice and add some toasted nuts if you like.

Sounds nice, but what can I replace beef with? I don't eat animal flesh anymore.
That looks delicious . . . but I do love authentic Chinese food. I want to go back to Hong Kong to get me some!
Beef and Broccoli is my favorite of the "non-authentic" chinese meal. I'll have to keep this recipe in mind, I'd love to be able to make my own.
@abilene_piper_lg@xanga - mushroom is always a good replacement for meat for me, just don't overcook it.
Yo my mom used to make this all the time! It is a good mix and damn tasty too ^.^
@abilene_piper_lg@xanga - try rehydrated Shiitake mushrroms (you'll find them dried at your local Ethnic Asian Store)
rehydrate them by immersing them in water until they're soft (can take up to an hour)
I don''t eat meat.. >.<
my mom makes this all the time - YUMMY :)
beef and broccoli is authentic Chinese food
they have it everywhere in hk
plus my mom made it all the time when i was small
i love brocolli with prawns or mushrooms! i think beef with brocolli sounds disgusting lol
@abilene_piper_lg@xanga - tofu! sometimes my mom uses tofu when she doesn't feel like cooking meat. either way is just as tasty as the other :]
@juliebeanss@xanga - Thanks.
loll ouuuu i order this all the time at chinese restaurants i love it (:
kinda sick of it now i had it two times in a row O_O..
@hellokidbye@xanga - yes, i definitely second mushrooms
tofu as well.
i also love to always add some spicyness into my meals. hee. XD
but yeah, dude, broc. and beef is authentic... it's just a common dish that imitation chinese restaurants use. although having the real taiwanese twist to a dish (nice and spicy) is always great. anyway thanks for sharing :)
I love shrimp with broccoli <3
That looks so good! I think I'll give it a try
MSG sounds like a very difficult thing to be allergic to nowadays. As for the recipe, that sounds pretty tasty.
