  • That "I Need to Have Gum" Feeling

There once was a time when I never worried about brushing, flossing or otherwise making my teeth feel minty fresh. When I was a kid, I would be lucky if I remembered to brush my teeth again at night, let alone rinsing out with mouthwash or anything like that.

Come 2009, things are different. While I wouldn't say my dental hygiene is above reproach, I am a lot more conscious about how my mouth feels after a meal. Some time ago, I got into the habit of chewing gum after lunch and dinner, and sometimes just while going out as an added safeguard against any potential bad breath. You don't want to be on a date with someone and have them wince at the odor of garlic and onions coming from your general direction.

I'm not totally sure that I do need to freshen up after meals. I suppose it couldn't hurt. Still, I find it very hard to go without chewing a piece of Stride gum or having a peppermint candy post-lunch or post-dinner. It's to the point where I feel real anxious when I don't have some sort of mint candy to appease my mouth between meals. My mouth just...feels unclean. In fact, if you were ever to see me in real life and I were to look real annoyed, you should try offering me a stick of gum. I'm probably suffering in silent agony from a mint flavor deficiency.

Are you a compulsive gum/mint chewer?
