Today is my one-year anniversary. Thank you, thank you. Takes a bow. On June 28, 2008, we tied the knot and cut into a masterpiece confection. My mom is a cake decorator, and she had spent quite a bit of time making a beautiful, four-tiered masterpiece that included a chocolate, white, and (on my request) lemon layers. So, one year ago today, that cake looked like this:
Check out those pretty pearls, ribbons, and lilies.
Oh, yeah...
Like most married couples, my husband and I saved the top layer of our cake. Awesome, right? Probably the best cake you've ever seen, right? And nobody makes 'em like my mom.
(by the way, she's on the right)
So, here we are one year later, querying how one-year old cake kept in the deep freeze will taste. Will it be lemony-fresh as the day we ate that one piece?
Well, it sure wasn't much to look at.
And my husband was scared of it.
But we cut into it and....
It was fabulous! Tasted delicious, moist, and wonderful. We couldn't have asked for better. What a great way to celebrate this milestone.

What's your favorite flavor of wedding cake/what flavor was your wedding cake? Did you keep it and try to eat it after a year? How was it?

Awwww, congrats =]
I want my wedding cake to have a lemon layer too =D
wedding cake? what is that?
we didnt have one. We didnt do anything very traditional!
That is a beautiful cake, your mom did an excellent job. And you both look beautiful in the picture.
Your mom did a wonderful job decorating your cake!
I didn't know you're supposed to save the top layer. Guess I'll do that when I get married.. haha
We just celebrated our one year anniversary on June 21, and we were equally surprised at how nicely the cake kept for a year. Congrats!
People save the top layer of the cake - for A YEAR?
When I married my ex-husband, we had a boring white and chocolate cake. However, our top tier didn't survive well after the first year, bc 1) my airtight container turned out not to be completely airtight, and 2) we moved it across the country (Nebraska to Maryland). The buttercream was sour and the cake had, omg, freezer burn! Icky!!
Your cake is beautiful!
Your cake is pretty. We didn't save our top layer. We just didn't want to. We wanted an ice cream cake on our anniversary. Ha ha.
When I married my soon-to-be-ex-husband (of 15-years today), we had seven cakes connected with bridges. Each cake were different flavors - banana, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, marble, carrot cake and the top was a white. It totally rocked - and it was free!
We were not even going to attempt to save the top piece because we were moving that same month and felt the cake would not make the coast-to-coast (North Carolina to California) traveling being frozen, preserved or protected.
Oh I didn't know about saving the top layer either, sound cool though :D
Looks yummy and splendid! :D
mmmm cake
My aunt and uncle lived with us when they got married so they put their "top layer" of the cake in our freezer. Me and my siblings were too young to know that people keep the cake to save it for a year and ended up eating the whole thing before they got back from their honeymoon. I felt so bad :(
I don't like lemon in cakes. lol
haha i've never heard of that tradition. and what a fantastic cake! i've only ever been to one wedding. they had a fantastic multi layer cake like that... but it was fake. the real cake was just a rectangle cake. haha. props to your mom!
awesome! I don't think the FH and I are doing a cake. Well, maybe a small top layer. We're thinking of these little cake balls that we love eating.
my wedding cake will be vanilla, but the very top tier will be chocolate ;). because chocolate cake is good, no matter what occasion!
ours was lemon, and we didn't save it. We just went back to the shop and had another top layer made.
Yum, lemon!
We saved just a piece of our cake, because we didn't think it would taste too good after being in the freezer for a year. But we didn't have room to keep it, so we had to leave it in my parent's, and we forgot to bring it back and eat it for our anniversary on June 7. I think its still sitting in the bottom of my parents big freezer now.
i'm not married, but i know my mom tried to save her's when she got remarried. it was horrible. i guess she just didn't seal it very well. somehow she talked me into taking a bite >.< however, i'm still gonna try when i get married (hopefully soonish!!). it's tradition.
haha thats awesome! the cake is soooooo pretty :D
oh that cake looks yummy. it's beautiful! and happy anniversary.
so pretty! :)
Lemon cake is delicious.
I would like to make my own wedding cake if possible. :) Working with fondant is daunting, though.
Mmm, I want mine to have vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet cake. Mmmm, my favorites. I didnt know about the saving the top piece. Thats cool. I will remember that.
