The Ten Worst Companies To Buy From
A few months ago, we started the transition to organic food.
It started when a Xangan (http://callmequell.xanga.com/ ) recommended something called the Better World Shopping Guide.
It's a tiny, concise book, printed on recycled paper.
I love this book. I'm close to adopting it as a religion.
It works like so:
1. You look up an item you want to buy. Say...a box of herbal tea.
2. The book gives each brand of tea a grade based on social responsibility, how they treat their employees, and what they do for local communities.
3. Then you can choose the most ethical brand you can afford. It doesn't have to be organic, but it doesn't have to be socially irresponsible either.
The book includes a list of the ten worst companies to give your money to:
1. Exxon-Mobil
2. Kraft
3. Wal-Mart
4. Chevron-Texaco
5. Pfizer
6. Nestle
7. General Electric (GE)
8. Archer Daniels Midland
9. General Motors
10. Tyson Foods
These companies all commit global sins, be it damaging the environment, buying off politicians, or treating workers unfairly.
Carlos and I changed our shopping habits gradually, first cutting out all Kraft products, then Nestle, and then Tyson. It wasn't difficult at all. It was just a matter of flipping packages over and looking for a trademark. Now we know that that no communities were harmed in the making of our mac and cheese, and that our chocolate was fairly traded. We're no longer consuming foods that were made with suffering, and it's made the transition into organics a lot easier.
We've also started filling our tank at Shell stations instead of Chevron. Gasoline is a necessary evil for most of us, so if we can lessen the impact on our planet just slightly, why not? There's usually a Shell down the street from Chevrons anyway.
I challenge you guys to cut one of the ten worst companies out of your shopping. Switch your gas station. Move your bank account to a local credit union if you're feeling brave. Just do something.
Tell irresponsible companies that if they want your money, it's going to be on your terms. They're going to have to treat their employees well, respect the environment, and do something for the communities they set up shop in.
You can buy the Better World Shopping Guide here: http://www.betterworldshopper.com/ or used on Amazon.
Do you think you can cut unethical companies out of your life?

At my school, in our major, we were taught to hate Wal-mart. Wal-mart is just horrible at treating workers, and then putting mom and pop shops out of business, putting companies out of business just because the companies do not want to comply with their extortion, etc.
if you don't buy from those 10 companies and other companies they own, you pretty much need to start growing your own food...
let's just take Kraft for example. No kraft, no A1 sauce. CAN YOU HANDLE THAT?! I sure can't
and plus, this post does not have enough food. needs more food. just put a reference to bacon and I'm happy.
Yeah, I'm still going to go to Wal Mart.
I only buy from one (that's Kraft) because sometimes their mac&cheese is on sale for 50 cents a box at Target, and I can't resist the savings. Everything else I don't patronize due to a lack of money. To be socially responsible, I should stop buying their products...*sniff*
Wal-mart? I was just starting to shop there for their good deals. Well, I'm definitely going to cut them and the others out, the only problem is to get my parents (who mostly do the buying) to do the same.

I always go to either Wawa or 7-11. If I really need something late at night, I'll go to Wal-mart. Otherwise, I go to Target where employees are actually nice and the store isn't filthy.
I like Wally World....
wow i'm surprised... on some of them =T
the only one i wasn't aware of was #8!
I already try to buy from small companies that I know are ethical, but sadly I can't always avoid #5...I need my meds : (
i like buying my gas from citgo because they donate heating oil to poor people who can't afford it (in the US too) but there are hardly any where i live
I dont go to walmart, its all about Albertsons. I dont buy Kraft, Tyson, or Nestle.
Yay, I already always go to Shell!
I've always had an deep rooted hatred for WalMart anyway, I only go in there if I can't find something anywhere else.
Don't bad mouth Kraft!!!!
My dad works for them. Lol.xo

Shell is an awful company. They're cited with human rights violations in Nigeria, and are supposed to be tried in court for it. Not only did they spill oil into the Niger Delta, causing "widespread and severe environmental damage" and poisoning the water supply, they failed in condemning the Saro-Wewa executions (people were protesting Shell because of their environmental degradation and then were killed by the government). The United States is their primary buyer, and the money went to supporting Nigeria's violent regime.
Shell is trying somewhat to make up for their human rights violations in recent years to repair their horrible reputation, but it's too little too late.

That's really cool.
@methodElevated@xanga - Which gas station would you recommend then? It's either that or Esso, Petro, or Husky.
@Lulabell_88@xanga - I don't know about those others. Sorry.
@methodElevated@xanga - Shell it is then.
@Lulabell_88@xanga - Fine, since you didn't want to do basic internet research, I did it for you. From what I saw, Petro seems very committed to upholding good human rights practices, so I would recommend them.
@Olyachka@xanga - ditto. I live at Walmart.
I think the best solution pretty much if everyone is concerned is we should just all crawl into a hole and die so we can all stop consuming.. I don't know if any big corporate company is going to be completely ethical.
im not giving up my kraft or wal-mart.
one of my friends hasn't eaten Nestle chocolate in a really long time, i think because of how they treat their workers, and i admire her for it. idk if i'd be able to do the same though. :P
Hey, neat-o.
I think Nestle is going to be super hard. They own a LOT of things. Some things that you wouldn't even think are theirs.
i can give all of these up, in fact, i don't use any of them. except for nestle. how can i say no to chunky bars!?!?!
I can live without all of those companies except Kraft. I'm gonna keep eating my Spongebob mac n cheese, sorry.
