  • Sonic Comes to My Area and All Hell Breaks Loose

For the longest time, I would hate to see Sonic commercials on TV, because there wasn't one even close to where I live. And then the news arrived that a Sonic Drive-In was coming to our area. I was mildly excited about this turn of events. My brother, meanwhile, was a man possessed. On the second or third day of its opening, upon seeing me, he immediately intercepted me, saying, in a firm voice, "Joe! Sonic is open! Do you want to go to Sonic?" It wasn't even a question, really; it was more like, "Joe, you want to go to Sonic!"

Alas, other people wanted to go too. When we got there, men in police uniforms were standing guard over the parking lot, preventing people from entering and overcrowding the space. Anybody who was getting in was parking elsewhere and walking over. We tried some subterfuge of our own, but got a nasty response from the woman from the Animal Shelter, saying this was not parking space for Sonic and that people who wanted to legitimately park at the shelter were unable to because of people trying the same maneuver. So we drove off and headed home, our car devoid of Sonic-oriented pleasures.

I guess this is just the nature of a grand opening of a restaurant on a busy highway at the start of summer. But I wonder if the fact that we haven't had Sonic in my area contributed to the apparent craziness of the situation. Periodically, I'll shake my fist at commercials for other eating establishments that are found in other parts of the country, but not in my state, including Buffalo Wild Wings, Golden Corral, and Jack in the Box. And while it's in the Garden State, I curse Central Jersey and South Jersey for having close proximity to Wawa. Those of you outside the mid-Atlantic region won't understand, but my heart (and stomach) yearns for a hoagie and some Wawa lemon iced tea.

Were you ever excited to have a new chain restaurant come to town? Is there one not currently in your area you'd like to see brought there?
