For the longest time, I would hate to see Sonic commercials on TV, because there wasn't one even close to where I live. And then the news arrived that a
Sonic Drive-In was coming to our area. I was mildly excited about this turn of events. My brother, meanwhile, was a man possessed. On the second or third day of its opening, upon seeing me, he immediately intercepted me, saying, in a firm voice, "Joe! Sonic is open! Do you want to go to Sonic?" It wasn't even a question, really; it was more like, "Joe, you want to go to Sonic!"
Alas, other people wanted to go too. When we got there, men in police uniforms were standing guard over the parking lot, preventing people from entering and overcrowding the space. Anybody who was getting in was parking elsewhere and walking over. We tried some subterfuge of our own, but got a nasty response from the woman from the Animal Shelter, saying this was not parking space for Sonic and that people who wanted to legitimately park at the shelter were unable to because of people trying the same maneuver. So we drove off and headed home, our car devoid of Sonic-oriented pleasures.
I guess this is just the nature of a grand opening of a restaurant on a busy highway at the start of summer. But I wonder if the fact that we haven't had Sonic in my area contributed to the apparent craziness of the situation. Periodically, I'll shake my fist at commercials for other eating establishments that are found in other parts of the country, but not in my state, including
Buffalo Wild Wings,
Golden Corral, and
Jack in the Box. And while it's in the Garden State, I curse Central Jersey and South Jersey for having close proximity to
Wawa. Those of you outside the mid-Atlantic region won't understand, but my heart (and stomach) yearns for a hoagie and some Wawa lemon iced tea.
Were you ever excited to have a new chain restaurant come to town? Is there one not currently in your area you'd like to see brought there?

I LOVE sonic ! there wasnt here one for years and one opened up last August and im so happy ! :D
God I miss Arbys...
i want sonic, fazolli's, cici's, and bob evans to come to my area.
Bleh. I hate Sonic. The only thing I go there for is the ice cream, which my stomach can partially hold down.
I understand you completely!
I a) am 20 miles away from the nearest Wawa, which is too far away just for a quick meal b) have watched THOUSANDS of Sonic commercials but don't have one single Sonic near where I reside c) have the same experience with lots of other restaurants, like Boston Market and that Fish N Chips place but I forget the name of.
3 words. In-N-Out.
I used to live in PA - and very close to Wawa. I'm now back in NY, where there are none! I miss Wawa so much... they have the best subs ... the best of a lot of things. ::sigh::
Sonic is what people in Kansas do for fun. "Hey, you wanna go on a Sonic run?" "Yeah, I'm cravin' a cherry limeade!"
Be sure you hit happy hour from 2-4.
UGH! SONIC! lol i work there. you see the same people everyday, and they order the same thing everyday! happy hour is the worst....it is usually insanely busy. we just get over the lunch rush, get things reorganized and stocked in the store and BAM happy hour! i like staying busy though....makes the time go by faster. emploee drinks are always half priced though....that makes me happy. lol i used to like it a lot when i was younger, we'd always ask to go eat there. now....i don't eat fast food often and i smell it all day i'm not real hungry for it. i do like the onion rings...the smell of those when i bring orders out gets to me some times. lol
I really used to wish there was a mcdonald's in my neighborhood. I live in nyc and i still have to take the subway 3 stops to find a mcdonald's! This made me mad, so I decided to not eat mcdonald's anymore. That'll show them!
Also, there's a burger king here, but that's lame. As for Sonic, I've never been there. I've never even seen one. What's the deal with that place?
i ate a sonics burger and i was a little disappointed but i doo lovee their shakesss!
i still haven't gone to sonic O_O although i've passed by one like every week last summer
@arenfro@xanga - I was GOING to say the EXACT same thing- My sister and I would hit up a cherry limeaide or vanilla coke and chedder bites and then we just go cruise.
I am devoted to Sonic and I miss it dearly.
I see those commercials all the time but there is no Sonic in NYC... although there are a couple in Jersey.
I've always had a Sonic in my ghetto little neighborhood, then they opened one on the other side of the city in the "rich" area. I still go to the ghetto one. XD Love love love Sonic. Blue coconut slushy is my favorite!
We don't have a sonic here! =(
i live in NY no sonic here
@blue_dragonfly420@xanga - I work at Sonic and at my store we get drinks for free.
A sonic opened right outside of Philly sometime last year I think. I went to one for the first time ever a few years ago in Arizona. I always saw the commercials but there was never one in Philly until last year.
PS I LOVE Wawa. Cheap gas, AMAZING hoagies, and the best iced tea around...especially after the bars close and you're STARVING.
i feel the same way when it comes to jack in the box. there is no jack in the box's in the whole state of kentucky yet we get commericals all the time from them. i absolutely love jack in the box's tacos and the closest one is in nashville tn. so i usually get to go there about twice or three times a year. so sometimes i wish that they would build a jack in the box down in kentucky.
@SirNickDon@xanga - i worked there back in high school. but it began to interfere with homework and what not so I quit, now in college I find myself back there. we used to get all order 1/2 off and drinks free but people began to abuse that (idiots!), so our manager changed it. i still absolutely love her though, shes one of the best managers i've ever had!
there's quite a few Sonic's around my area. my friends and i do hang out there often. my one complain is that we DONT HAVE A WHITE CASTLE *tears*
I take it you're from North Jersey?
wait.
wait wait.
THERE'S A SONIC IN NORTH JERSEY?!?!?
I myself hail from Central Jersey and Wawa-Land. I grew up in Media - a town away from "Wawa, PA".
@inthenameofwater@xanga - lmao yeaa, it opened last week. its in paramus? yea. route 17? think so.
OMG. yea. totally know what you're talkin about though. my friends went in 5 cars & only 1 out of the 5 were able to get through [eh, that's what they said. didn't understand the logic of it]. i heard there were TV peoplers there too. and all this shizz. i heard it was good and all, but not totally worth the wait. eh. so yea, i'll wait. -____- check it on facebook, half the statuses are of people braggin about going to sonic.
this exact same thing happened to jollibee, a filipino fastfood chain that opened in queens, ny. this is the first one on the east coast and they are MAD rare in the U.S.. if you think sonic opening was crazy, jollibee, oh man oh man. people were standing on lines for 3 blocks lonng. they had to cut the hours cus lines were so long. and this went on for weeks. its been open for a few months now, and even now, there's never not a line.
