  • Screw Freshman Fifteen--Top Ten HEALTHY Snacks

People were commenting on how in my previous post, College Food Survival Guide--Top Ten Snacks, all the snacks are pretty unhealthy - though admittedly addicting. Hence, this post came about. I have to admit I don't really munch on a lot of these except number 1 and the occasional healthy snack here and there (or when I'm in a feisty need-to-eat-healthy-crap-to-unclog-my-arteries mood). But my friends, who are much healthier than I am, eat tons of healthy stuff. So to reiterate myself, if you need a booster when dorming or even just at work or at home, these snacks are feasible to buy and to eat as well as to stay not unhealthy.

I'm not a big yogurt fan (was a big froyo fan though), but my friends love eating plain yogurt with fruits and granola. It was something healthy to savor and enjoy during the wee hours of the morn. (Taken from the previous post.)

Sweetened soy milk (though healthier unsweetened...but then bland) is better than carbonated drinks. Water, green tea, and real juices, like orange and apple, are also great to refresh yourself with.

Cereal again is another cheap and healthy way of eating, but it really depends on the cereal brand, eating cheerios > cocoa puffs.

My room mate loves to buy Saltine crackers, so I tag along and buy them too. I prefer the salted kind, but she likes the unsalted kind; she says toma-toe, I say peppe-roni. Crackers can also be eaten with dip and can fill you up if you eat a good amount of them.

Pretzels are the best substitute for chips; they are less flavorful, but are quite fun to nibble on.

Rice cakes (the unflavored ones) are my best friend's favorite snack to inhale, especially if she's had a little bit to drink... For this reason, this snack is good to have lying around when you're having little parties because it won't add a lot of calories and they're pretty healthy compared to other dry snacks.

Organic peanut butter. I think peanut butter is healthy in small doses, but knowing that it's organic must make it healthier right? Although, I never tried it, other people on my floor have and said it tastes pretty yummy.

Fruits are an obvious healthy choice, natural and sweet. My favorites are watermelon - albeit not easy to exactly eat in college, oranges, plums, grapes, and bananas.

Celery, baby carrots, plum tomatoes, anything veggie-like and able to be held between your fingers or held in the palm of your hands are easy to eat on-the-go and are always beneficial. I always enjoy the crunching sounds made from eating celery and carrots...it's sexy - rather...mesmerizing?

Raisins, dried up grapes, suggests that grapes are all-purpose; after all, wine does exist too! Easy to slip in your mouth as a professor drones on and on about Shakespeare or on how diamonds eventually return to their graphite form depending on pressure and temperature (diamonds aren't forever!) or on how the deviation of so and so is this or on how the Skinner box could have been seen as unethical.

Hummus has gotten me through a lot of tough times. There were times where I was craving something to munch on and dipped cracker after cracker (chip after chip) into hummus. It's best in the early morning when everyone is asleep and you're still cramming because you were stupid enough to study last minute; it's a good snack to take a break with.

There's lots of snacks that I didn't mention, like Special K bars and vegetable chips, because there's just to many. So what snacks did you like or would like to eat from this list? And what healthy snacks do you enjoy that wasn't found on this list?
