QOTD: Do You Have Food Allergies?

I was recently watching a cooking show and was surprised when the host mentioned that at her son's school bake sale everyone was asked to bring nut-free baked goods. This was because so many children have nut allergies these days. I didn't realize how common nut allergies were.

Then I realized several of my friends are also allergic to shellfish, watermelon and peaches. Another person I recently met can't digest wheat very well so instead uses spelt.

I don't have any food allergies to my knowledge (I'm a little lactose intolerant) and curious what foods people are allergic to.

Do you have any food allergies?

    Yes, I'm allergic to seafood...

I'm allergic to bleu cheese and anything with that type of mold (including penicillin).  A few years ago, I also developed a severe allergy to tropical fruits (pineapple, mangoes and kiwis, as far as I know... I'm not willing to try others now in fear that my throat will close up).

I also have an aversion to aspartame/artificial sweeteners, cheese and apple juice; if I eat/drink too much, I'll get a terrible headache.  I never figured out why.

Nope, and I'm so glad. I can eat literally anything, and I do.

ya, i've got quite a list - wheat gluten, eggs, dairy, sea perch & cod fish. which means i can't take any bread, pizza, noodles & most of the desserts... :'(

I'm not really allergic to anything.
My brother has a severe peanut allergy and every time he comes in contact with any kind of nut his reaction is worse than the last.
A friend of mine has a gluten allergy. She has to REALLY watch what she eats. It sucks b/c she has to read EVERY nutrition label on every food item she buys.

judging from my body...hell no. LOLS.

  • chPanda@xanga

I don't have any food allergies...I am able to eat anything, which is good because I like trying new stuff.

I don't but my middle son seems to have an intolerance (it's a mildier form of allergy) to grapes/raisins, apricots and cranberries. My boys also have a friend who is allergic to tree nuts and peanuts.

My boyfriend is severely allergic to milk... different from lactose intolerance, because if he eats anything with milk in it, his throat will close up and he'll break out in hives. You don't realize how many foods have milk in them until you have to start reading labels and avoiding things. SO MUCH has milk in it, and a lot of things that don't have specific milk proteins in them.

I'm allergic to chocolate poptarts, no joke. I can eat other poptarts, and I can eat chocolate(thank god!!), but not chocolate poptarts. It's something in the chocolate filling, it makes me break out in super hives and have trouble breathing. It's wierd, but my dad gets it too.

I'm mildly allergic to most raw fruits (With the exception of citrus fruits) and vegetables (birch pollen).
Strawberries sometimes make me break out into hives.

No food allergies here! I can't wear most earrings, though. I'm going to try 14k gold. I hear those can be good. Seriously. Real silver, titanium, etc. My ears were always a little infected and never, never healed all the way. I was religious about cleaning, too! I just want to wear earrings and be PERTY! :F

I want to wear pretty earrings on my wedding day.

Yeah, I'm allergic/sensitive to Sunflower Seeds and Oil, it's in alot of things, not just food. I have to read the label on everything I use. And just because something was safe last time doesn't mean it is this time or vice versa. It's particularly hard when eating out.

  • garlicface@xanga

@Sugarling@xanga -  Oh man, I'm allergic to most earrings that weren't made of gold, too. It used to be super bad.
I found that wearing the earrings that are dangly and have a hook instead of studs don't make them swell up as bad.

So no earrings unless they're gold. Maybe that means I'm high maintenance, lol?

I have no diagnosed food allergies, but based on one itchy experience, I think I might be allergic to certain kinds of peppers. I also have trouble digesting foods with tomato sauce (like pizza and spaghetti) and foods high in sodium.

Hubby has no food allergies--just an allergy to any kind of gel-cap pill. It's something in the gel coating, apparently.

A friend of mine and I were once at Frulatti (mall chain that sells smoothies and slushies). I ordered a strawberry slush, she ordered peach. We didn't pay much attention to it at the time, but the woman behind the counter made mine first, then used the same blender to make my friend's--without washing it. My friend is allergic to strawberries. By the time we got back to her house, her throat was swollen and she was covered in giant red, itchy welts. Thank god it's not a life-threatening allergy...Frulatti could have had a lawsuit on their hands.

  • GreatBigSea_Fan@xanga

No, and I consider myself very lucky that I don't. =D

  • rockin_charm@xanga

Honey, and i usually get stomach aches when i eat to much seafood. does that count?

  • labelledesreves@xanga

My family is from a coastal city in Vietnam so we grew up eating a ton of seafood. But about a year ago, I out of nowhere developed an allergy to lobster & I believe scallop too. I broke out in hives every where, the worst being along my eyelashes & on the soles of my feet & the palms of my hands. The doc gave me some meds to eliminate the hives, which took about three days to completely clear up. Ever since then, I haven't touched anything containing lobster or scallops, though I'm always so tempted... :(
